International actor Dev Patel, who is known for his films like Slumdog Millionaire, The Man Who Knew Infinity, Lion and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is all set to make his directorial debut with Monkey Man.
The film which was originally slated to release on Netflix, and had been ready a while ago, was picked up by Jordan Peele- an American actor- comedian – filmmaker for a theatrical release. And we at ETimes, are now exclusively learning that the film, which is slated to release on 5th April, will have premiere shows across the United States of America on 4th April, the tickets for which have already gone on sale, and going by response, it is one of the most looked forward films this summer.
The film recently had its premiere show at South by Southwest film festival which was attended by the entire star cast of the film from Dev Patel to Vipin Sharma to Sobhita Dhulipala.
In fact, the first review from the show is already out and it is by critic J Hurtado. He wrote, “MONKEY MAN is brutally violent, against the villains, but also against the hypocrisy of religion, the tyranny of caste, and the oppression of a corrupt government. Dev Patel nailed it, bloody as hell and intense as fuck.”
The synopsis of the film on the AMC theaters states that it is about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless. Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who makes a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him. Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes.
