Dharmendra showcases his poetic mastery, often expressing himself through shayaris. Despite his 88 years, he remains youthful at heart, finding comfort in poetry, poems, and ghazals. His poetic talent is not just restricted to social media but has been showcased on various TV shows over the years.
In a recent video, Dharmendra is captured lip-syncing to a ghazal originally written by Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. The rendition of the ghazal, sung by the legendary Mohammad Rafi for the 1960 film ‘Lal Qila‘, accompanies the footage. The actor shared the video on his social media account, adding a heartfelt caption in Hindi that translates to, “Sitting here, I express the realities of life to my family. My fans should not see me in sorrow.”

The ghazal, originally penned by Bahadur Shah Zafar during his removal from Rangoon, Myanmar, reflects the poignant sentiments of the Mughal emperor as he wrestled with separation from his homeland and loved ones. Following his association with the 1857 uprising, the British authorities tried Bahadur Shah Zafar for disloyalty and deported him to Burma, where he eventually passed away. The ghazal’s inclusion in the 1960 film ‘Lal Qila’ in the song ‘Lagta Nahi Dil Mera'[ captures the constant sorrow and longing embedded in Bahadur Shah Zafar’s verses.
Dharmendra, with a career spanning six decades, has contributed to over 300 films. His recent appearances include the ensemble film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani’, helmed by Karan Johar, and ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.
