Javed Akhtar is a highly respected figure in Bollywood. However, his journey to success has been far from easy. The veteran star emotionally recalled the trauma of going hungry for days, and said that he is still affected by those memories.
In a recent interaction with Barkha Dutt for Mojo Story, Javed mentioned that in the mornings, he often sits by the sea and looks out at the ocean from his windows.During breakfast, the food is brought to him on a trolley, and he sometimes feels like he’s part of a drama, questioning whether all this truly belongs to him. He expresses gratitude for having an abundance of food now, recalling moments when he was extremely hungry in the past and wishing he could have enjoyed a simple dish like daal or sabzi during those times.
When asked if there were days when he didn’t have food to eat, Javed explained that when one doesn’t have anything to eat, they tend to avoid situations that involve food. For instance, if someone invites you to eat at their home when you haven’t eaten since morning, you might decline the offer by saying you’ve already eaten. He mentioned that he has experienced such situations where he declined food invitations to avoid revealing his hunger, which he finds shameful.
The veteran star went on to say that there were two to three moments which have traumatised him very badly; that trauma has remained with him. According to him, being hungry for two days, three days, it’s traumatic. On the third day, there is no difference between a human being and a dog. All your sense of dignity, your self-respect, it becomes so vague. The only thing that you know is that you’re hungry.
