Did you know Amjad Khan wasn’t the first choice for Gabbar Singh in ‘Sholay’? – Times of India


One of the finest actors and directors of Indian cinema, late actor Amjad Khan gifted us over 132 cinemas with his impactful screen presence and also for portraying daunting villains. Speaking of villains, Amjad’s iconic one still remains to be that of Gabbar Singh in ‘Sholay’.

But did you know, the actor wasn’t the first choice to play the classic character, Ramesh Sippy‘s cult movie ‘Sholay’. Yes, you heard it right, the role had earlier gone to Danny Denzongpa, who was the first choice of the director. Danny let go of the role, as he was then shooting for Feroz Khan‘s ‘Dharmatma’.

Reportedly, Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar too, who played ‘Jai’ and ‘Thakur’ respectively in the movie, had expressed their desire to play the role of Gabbar.

Javed Akhtar had approached Amjad for Gabbar’s role, however, even he was apprehensive about his voice, because he felt it lacked depth reportedly. Well, the film is now considered a blockbuster for generations of all ages
