The film chronicles the rise of Khabar Lahariya, India’s only newspaper run by Dalit women. The documentary is directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, also debutants. The film follows this ambitious group of Dalit wonder women – led by their chief reporter, Meera – as the team switches from print to digital in order to stay relevant. Armed with smartphones and the courage and conviction one must be born with, they investigate the incompetence of the local police force, listen to and stand by victims of caste and gender violence, and challenge long-standing, harmful practices that lead to injustice and intimidation.
Oscar Awards Jury Ujwal Nirgudkar shared, “I am very happy that a documentary from India is selected for nomination this year. Many people from India are not aware that a Documentary also can win an Oscar. I hope & wish it also wins an Oscars on 27th March Oscars ceremony.”
The ceremony, celebrating the best films from a year in which Covid-weary audiences slowly headed back into movie theaters, will be held on March 27.
The nominated movies, actors and filmmakers were unveiled in a pre-dawn live-streamed ceremony hosted by actors Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross.
