Watch: Sreelekha’s tribute to Sandhya Mukhopadhyay after the legendary singer rejected Padma Shri – Times of India


Not often do you see a recipient rejecting India’s top civilian honours. They are needed to confirm their acceptance before the final announcement. However, legendary singer Sandhya Mukhopadhyay did the same when she rejected the Padma Shri award on the eve of Republic Day. She refused the honour saying that it’s more deserving for junior artistes, not for someone of her stature.

Many have backed the veteran singer on her decision to reject Padma Shri and she has been showered with love from not just fans but several celebrities from Bengal. Popular actress Sreelekha Mitra, too, paid a small tribute to the iconic singer. The ‘Once Upon A Time In Calcutta’ actress took to her social media handle to post a video wherein you can see her singing an iconic Sandhya Mukhopadhyay song ‘E Sudhu Gaaner Din’. The video received immense love from her fans while praising
her tonal quality and unique voice as well.

Earlier, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay’s daughter Soumi Sengupta had said that her mother informed the official who had called from Delhi that she doesn’t want to be a Padma Shri recipient and felt “insulted” for being offered this award at her age of 90. A call came to the veteran singer to seek her consent to be named a Padma Shri in the Republic Day awards list.

Sandhya Mukhopadhyay’s has been a pillar of Bengal’s music fraternity for years and has also sung for a so many music directors in Bollywood such as S D Burman, Anil Biswas, Madan Mohan, Roshan and Salil Chowdhury to name a few.
