When a nervous Amitabh Bachchan signed hospital papers for a critically injured Amjad Khan – Times of India


Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan used to share a great bond and stories about their friendship are still being talked about in Indian cinema. Recently Shehla Khan, the wife of late actor Amjad Khan, revealed one such incident when Amitabh Bachchan signed hospital documents ahead of Amjad Khan’s surgery after he met with an accident ahead of the shooting of ‘The Great Gambler’ (1979).

Shehla recalled Amjad Khan was needed a tracheostomy and like everyone else Amitabh was also nervous because they weren’t sure whether Amjad would make it.

Amjad’s wife further revealed during the interview with Pinkvilla that the accident happened in Sawantwadi, near Goa, and at that time she was six months pregnant with their daughter Ahlam. Shehla too suffered severe injuries on her face her bones were broken. Her right hand was in a sling and the left hand was out of the socket. Meanwhile, Amjad had 13 of his ribs and femur bone broken. The steering wheel had also ruptured his lungs as it penetrated his chest. There was also internal bleeding.

She also added that a nervous Amitabh Bachchan was surprised to see his friend writing down the term ‘tracheostomy’ on a piece of paper even in such a serious condition. Amjad Khan also gestured to Amitabh Bachchan if he would be undergoing it. Soon, Amjad and his wife were shifted to Mumbai on a chartered flight and they stayed in the Nanavati Hospital for three months.

For the unversed, in ‘The Great Gambler’ Amjad was initially cast for the role of Mr Saxena but he couldn’t do it because of the accident and was replaced by Utpal Dutt.
