Payal Dev recalls singing ‘Ab Tohe Jane Na Doongi’ for ‘Bajirao Mastani’; says “when Sanjay Leela Bhansali complimented me, I knew that was my moment of victory” – Exclusive – Times of India

Late singer Lata Mangeshkar’s song ‘Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai,’ is true for a lot of vocalists of the industry, and one of them is the ‘Genda Phool’ fame songster Payal Dev. This female singer is known for her versatility. She has done groovy numbers, love ballads, and more, and each one of them got a lot of love from the audience. However, when she sang ‘Ab Tohe Jane Na Doongi,’ a song with classical flavor, for Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s ‘Bajirao Mastani’, the impact was something else altogether.
Speaking about the song and her experience of working with the ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Payal Dev in her exclusive conversation with ETimes said, “It was the biggest song of my career when I started. It was my dream to work with Sanjay sir, in fact, it was my dream to see him, meet him. So finally when I got this opportunity to sing for him, initially I didn’t believe only. I was in self-doubt, this is Sanjay Leela Bhansali, what can I offer to him. Then Aditya told me that if he has chosen you, then perhaps he believes you are capable enough.”

“So when the song ‘Ab Tohe Jane Na Doongi’ was being made, I went for dubbing. He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) didn’t make a single change to the vocals, he said it sounded amazing. Nobody could have sung this better than you. Right then and there I had my moment of victory. As I told you earlier that initially I used to go for dubbing but it ended up being rejected. So when Sanjay sir complimented me, I knew that was my moment of victory, now it really doesn’t matter if the song comes out in my voice or not,” she expressed with a big smile on her face.
Initially, Payal didn’t know that the song she dubbed was for a magnum opus. So it took her by surprise when the cards were revealed. “Then finally when the song came out, I got to know it was for the movie ‘Bajirao Mastani’, which is a big franchise in itself. We rarely see such movies being made, and being a part of it was a huge deal. Also, working for Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a lifetime experience,” concluded the singer.
