Afghan Dreamers is a very important story that needs to be told: Ali Fazal – Times of India

After elaborate wedding celebrations across cities, Ali Fazal is back to work. The actor has dived into his next Hollywood venture, which will be directed by filmmaker Bill Guttentag, a two-time Oscar winner for his shorts You Don’t Have To Die and Twin Towers. Ali will be seen as one of the leads in the film based on the inspiring true story of an all-girls robotics team from Afghanistan called Afghan Dreamers. The team from Herat, Afghanistan, founded in 2017 by Afghan tech entrepreneur Roya Mahboob includes girls in the 12 to 18 age group and their mentors.

While a documentary made by David Greenwald captures the all-girl team’s struggle to succeed in international competitions while combating their male-dominated culture and the threat of the Taliban, Guttentag’s feature film will also follow the story about the program that was started by Roya to help young women develop their skills in the field of science and technology. The film is set against the chaotic and sometimes dangerous backdrop of the country’s politics.

Ali says, “I am excited and humbled to be directed by Bill, who has an impeccable body of work. Afghan Dreamers is a very important story that needs to be told, and I’m happy to be part of its cinematic retelling.”

The film’s shoot recently began in Morocco. A majority of the 50-day schedule is being filmed across Morocco and Budapest.
