On Tuesday morning, Srabani Sen took to her Facebook handle and wrote, “Aaj Maa bhore chole gelen.”
According to reports, Sumitra Sen was under the weather since last month and was rushed to a private hospital on December 29 after her condition deteriorated. However, she was brought home later, and the veteran singer died at her residence.
Sumitra Sen was undergoing treatment for severe bronchopneumonia. Her condition deteriorated on January 2 and she passed away on the wee hours of January 3.
While speaking to media, Srabani Sen had earlier said that her mother is suffering from age-related ailments and doctors are trying their best. Sharing that her mother’s condition is not good, she added that the family brought her home after speaking to the doctors.
Sumitra Sen’s daughters Srabanti Sen and Indrani Sen are also Rabindra Sangeet icons and have continued their mother’s legacy.
Sumitra Sen who was honoured with the Sangeet Mahasamman award by West Bengal government in 2012 enthralled music lovers for decades with Rabindra Sangeets like ‘Megh Bolechhe Jabo Jabo’, ‘Tomari Jharnatalar Nirjone’, ‘Sakhi Bhabona Kahare Bole’, ‘Achhe Dukho Achhe Mrityu’ to name a few.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the veteran singer’s demise saying, ”I am deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Sumitra Sen, who had enthralled the audience for decades. I had a close relationship with her for a long time. The West Bengal government had awarded her ‘Sangeet Mahasamman’ in 2012. Her passing away is an irreparable loss to the music world. My sincere condolences to Sumitra di’s daughters Indrani and Srabani, and her fans.”
