Mumtaz recalls how Shammi Kapoor proposed to her: ‘Unhone straightforward kaha tha I want to marry you’ – Times of India

Yesteryear actress Mumtaz recently appeared on Indian Idol 13 along with veteran actor Dharmendra. While remembering her late co-star Shammi Kapoor, Mumtaz said that Shammi had proposed to her and he was pretty straightforward to ask her to marry him.
“Unhone straightforward kaha tha ‘I want to marry you.’ Main 17 saal ki thi. Mujhe shaadi nahi karna tha isliye shaadi nahi ki. (I was 17 years old. I didn’t want to get married and so I didn’t). But I do miss him sometimes. Aap puchte the Mumtaz kisse shaadi karegi, main bolti thi Shah of Iran ke bete se (They would ask whom would Mumtaz marry, I would say with the son of Shah of Iran),” Mumtaz said on the singing reality show.

There’s no secret that Mumtaz had a brief affair with Shammi Kapoor when she had a phenomenon in the industry. But she went through a tremendous heartbreak when she declined to marry him. Earlier this year, Mumtaz had said in an interview that she loved him enormously and he loved her too.

She had expressed her regret of not being able to marry him. She had said that they broke up amicably and they separated with understanding. She had also added that if she married Shammi at that time, it wouldn’t have worked because then she wanted to become an actor and accomplish something in life.

In her previous interview with ETimes, Mumtaz had said, “Shammi Kapoor was really sweet and compassionate with me, Nobody could hardly think we were in love. Nobody thought I had turned him down for marriage since Shammi’s financial standing was better; they questioned, How can Mumtaz deny Shammi?”
