Vidya Balan gets emotional as she wears a saree gifted by Lata Mangeshkar while receiving the Deenanath Mangeshkar award – Times of India

Vidya Balan was honoured with the Deenanath Mangeshkar Award today for her contribution to cinema. Asha Bhonsle, Pankaj Udhas and Jackie Shroff were also present at the occasion. While giving her thank you speech, Vidya got emotional as she recalled memories about Lata Mangeshkar. She also wore a black saree which she said was gifted to her by the Nightingale of India.
Vidya said at the event, “I’ve always felt that I’m very unfortunate that I’ve never been able to feature in a song sung by Lata ji. But in 2015, I was at an award function and I kept seeing her. I couldn’t take my eyes off her and someone told her that. So, very sweetly, after a week, she sent me this saree which I want to show all of you. I consider it as a big blessing.”

The actress then called the legendary singer and thanked her for the saree. She then told Lata ji that she would wear this saree and come to meet her. However, she never got a chance. “Perhaps that’s why I’m here to get this award so that I can wear this saree and show everyone this blessing. Lataji khud ‘swar’ hai, sangeet hai’. This award and blessing is priceless to me. I’ve won many awards in my career and I considered those as a form of appreciation and encouragement but today this award feels like ‘respect’.”
Vidya hopes she continued to get blessings from the singer. The actress further recalled a memory with Asha Bhonsle. “We were together in a flight and I felt she’s younger than me because she’s so full of life and child-like. So, thank you for your blessings also Asha ji.”

Balan who was last seen in ‘Jalsa’ will be seen next in a film with Pratik Gandhi, Ileana D’cruz and Sendhil Ramamurthy.
