Anurag Kashyap on The Kerala Story controversy: I’m totally against banning anything but it is a propaganda film | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

Adah Sharma starrer The Kerala Story continues to make noise for its controversial plot. On Saturday, veteran actor Kamal Haasan called the Sudipto Sen directorial a propaganda and said that he is dead against the propaganda movies as they are based on lies that divide people of the country. And now filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has called The Kerala Story a propaganda film.
Speaking about the film continue to be political, Anurag told a news portal that in today’s age, there’s no escaping politics, adding that it is very hard for cinema to be non-political. There are a lot of propaganda films like The Kerala Story are being made. He said that he is against banning anything but he remained firm on his views that the film is indeed a propaganda film.
He also added that as a filmmake, he doesn’t want to make a film that sounds like counter-propaganda or sound like an activist. He said that he is making cinema and cinema has to be based on reality and truth.

When he was asked if he can make films that he wants given the socio-political climate of the country, Anurag said that if you’re honest, you can. They can’t shut down anything that’s factual and not taking sides. He added that counter-propaganda can also be dishonest, but honest they can’t fight it.
The Kerala Story was banned by the West Bengal government, fearing tensions among communities. Theatres in Tamil Nadu had decided to stop the screening, citing the law-and-order situation and a poor audience turnout. Last week, the Supreme Court stayed the West Bengal government’s order banning the film in the state and asked Tamil Nadu to ensure the safety of the moviegoers.
