As the release date for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani approaches there is a growing curiosity about the vast cast which includes such iconic names as Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, Ranveer Singh and Bengal’s superstar Tota Roy Chowdhury, who plays Alia Bhatt’s father.
Since Alia plays a Bengali character, Karan Johar wanted the father to be played by an authentic character. Says a source very close to the film, “Alia learnt Bengali for her part as Rani Chatterjee. She will be seen breaking into Bengali while chatting with her dad. But it is Tota Roy Choudhury who plays Alia’s Bengali dad who actually learnt a completely new skill for Karan’s film.”
Tota, we can now reveal, plays a Kathak dancer, and not just an amateur. He plays an accomplished Kathak dancer. And for this, Tota learnt Kathak for one year. It is rare for a male Indian classical dancer on screen to not be effeminate or gay. Kamal Haasan did it in Viswaroopam. Now, Tota Roy Chowdhury gives a new twist to the concept of celluloid masculinity with his proficiency in Kathak in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani.
