Asur 2 : Rise Of The Dark Side – Times of India

Story: Shubh Joshi, a serial killer, returns for vengeance after being convicted at the end of season one, and this time he takes the challenge to a whole new level. With the heroes fallen apart, will a miserable Dhananjay Rajpoot (Arshad Warsi) and a devastated Nikhil Nair (Barun Sobti) be able to stop him?
Review: “Mahayudh nikat hai, Kalyug ko uske charam seema tak pahunchane ka samay aa gaya hai,” says Shubh Joshi, a fervent believer in Indian mythology. He is the one behind gruesome and methodical killings that leave no trace, but the Balinese mask of a demon comes back once again in Asur 2. Nothing has changed in this struggle between good and evil. Except that the stakes are higher now that Asur (Kali) threatens to rise and conquer the world. Will CBI and forensic experts, Dhananjay Rajpoot aka DJ and Nikhil Nair, and their team, be able to nab him down and save the world?
The first season of ‘Asur’ ended on a cliffhanger, leaving viewers to speculate on the fate of the killer, and this season picks up where the first left off. The story continues to follow the aftermath of the case, in which the CBI officers involved are dealing with personal and professional repercussions. DJ, who was framed and lost his job, also suffers the loss of his wife, while Nikhil Nair, an autopsy expert, lost his daughter while working on the case. And this time, everyone is scattered, and attempting to cope with their personal demons and guilts until they have to work together again to solve the crime.
Created by Gaurav Shukla and directed by Oni Sen, this season kickstarts with even more violence that instantly grabs your attention. Every episode begins with Shubh’s past and his journey to the present, where he poses the same question—are we born evil or do we bring our inherited evil out when forced into a difficult situation? We previously learned how Shubh mercilessly murdered his father with utmost precision, but this season we see that he doesn’t stop there and that there is more to him than meets the eye.
This dark thriller continues the high-octane chase as the CBI races against time to gather evidence and track down the serial killer from the previous season. And if you have seen season one and enjoyed its dark narrative then the new season certainly ups the ante. In every episode, Shubh connects with people and does all the talking hidden behind the mask by hijacking all the screens, which has a lot of resemblances from the Spanish thriller ‘Money Heist’. The different timelines, which take us to Shubh’s past and the present-day challenges of DJ and Nikhil, are shot and edited crisply and you don’t feel disconnected at any point. This time, viewers are given a lot of specifics about how the experts are following the leads.
The story, screenplay, cinematography and music are on point. The gripping and satisfying climax, which keeps viewers riveted to their screens throughout, deserves special praise. This eight-part series is engaging for most part, although the hourly installments occasionally feel stretched.
Arshad Warsi continues to lead the show with his sincere act. His defeated DJ is a more brutal and violent figure with a lot more to offer. Barun Sobti has once again pulled off an excellent portrayal. In the scenes, where he is grappling with the guilt of losing his daughter and still trying to focus to solve the case, he totally draws us with his acting chops. Besides Arshad and Barun, actors like Ridhi Dogra, Anupriya Goenka, Amey Wagh, Gaurav Arora, Abhishek Chauhan have again done a fantastic job. Meiyang Chang as Paul Shangpliang, the Anti-Terror Force (ATF), and Adithi Kalkunte Shyamprasad as Ishani Chaudhary have all performed admirably in their roles as new team members. This thriller heavily relies on each character constantly fighting a battle with his mind and heart.
All said, ‘Asur 2’ is a compelling mythological thriller that continues to thrill right up to the very end. Without a question, this is a must-watch sequel.
