Did you know Ameesha Patel was not the first choice for Mangal Pandey: The Rising? | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

Today is Ameesha Patel’s 48th birthday. She has acted in several well-known films after her first foray into films where she made a splash with the Hrithik Roshan starrer, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai. After that she has gone on to act in several key films including Mangal Pandey: The Rising in which she essays the role of a Bengali woman who has been widowed and is being forced by the family to observe the rights of Sati.
In the film, she is saved by a British military captain – Captain William Gordon. But did you know that Ameesha was not the first choice to play this role. In an interview, Aishwarya Rai had said that she was Ketan Mehta’s choice for this role, but there was a disagreement between the producer and her agents. So, it wasn’t as if she was replaced, but the deal did not come through.
What producer Bobby Bedi had said at that time was that she wanted double her fees and that is why they replaced her. Apparently, in the film Aishwarya was being offered only Rs 1.5 crore while Aamir Khan was going to get Rs 7 crore.
Reportedly, it was Aamir who suggested Ameesha for the role. He had seen her in a BBC game show and he was impressed by her IQ and he then spoke to Ketan Mehta to cast her in the role.
