Garfield, the beloved lasagna-loving orange cat, has been a cultural icon since his debut in the 1978 Jim Davis comic strip. Despite numerous television series, holiday specials, and two live-action/CGI films featuring Bill Murray, fans have long awaited an animated theatrical release for the feline sensation. Though there have been two live-in-action adaptations of Garfield, one in 2004 ‘Garfield: The Movie,’ followed by its sequel, ‘Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties’ in 2006.Both movies are available for streaming online. Now another treat of this cat-drama is coming in 2024. And here’s all you need to know about it.
The trailer
The trailer of ‘The Garfield Movie‘ was released on November 13, 2023. It introduced a cute baby Garfield scheming to enter a restaurant, setting the tone for a comedic adventure. The storyline centers on Garfield’s unexpected reunion with his father, Vic, leading to a high-stakes heist that forces the pampered cat into a wild outdoor adventure with his canine friend, Odie.

The release date
The release date for ‘The Garfield Movie’ was initially set for February 16, 2024, but it’s now expected to hit theaters on Friday, May 24, 2024. The film will debut during a competitive Memorial Day weekend, alongside major releases like ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ and the ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ prequel, ‘Furiosa.’
The OTT premiere
Initially exclusive to theaters, ‘The Garfield Movie’ will eventually be available on Netflix, thanks to the studio’s 2021 deal with the streaming platform.

The cast and crew
Chris Pratt leads the voice cast as Garfield, joined by Samuel L. Jackson as Vic and Harvey Guillén as Odie. Other notable voices include Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein Nicholas Hoult, Ving Rhames, Cecily Strong, and Bowen Yang.
Further, the movie marks the reunion of director Mark Dindal and writer David Reynolds, known for their work on ‘Chicken Little’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Groove.’
