Dilip Kumar is celebrated as one of the most distinguished actors in Indian cinema. Renowned for his stellar performances in classics such as Devdas, Gunga Jumna, and Mughal-e-Azam, he is considered a paragon of excellence in Hindi cinema. Despite projecting poise and elegance on screen, off-screen he was a passionate food enthusiast with a particular fondness for spicy dishes.
Now, in an interview with Film Companion, Shabana Azmi recalled an anecdote where she called him a foodieand said that he loved to eat all kinds of rubbish food.She said that he had an immense appetite, enjoying pakodas and a variety of indulgent foods. Reflecting on a story he shared, she found it exceptionally charming. He informed her, “Saira put me on adiet, providing soup and boiled chicken. I ate it. At 2 in the morning, feeling sorry for myself, I walked out of my bedroom, went to the fridge, and consumed everything inside, stating that I slept hungry, so now I can do this.”

Dilip Kumar, married to actor Saira Banu for more than 55 years, was treated to biryani and ice cream by his wife on his 95th birthday. She expressed to PTI, “He loves biryani, and I will make it for him, but in a small quantity as he is unwell. He also enjoys vanilla ice cream; I will check with the doctors if we can give him a small portion of that too. Additionally, we will have a birthday cake.”

In an earlier interview with Rediff, veteran actor Rakhee mentioned his fondness for good food, stating that he enjoyed good food. He loved her cooking, although his wife Sairaji closely monitored his diet, allowing him limited access. Nevertheless, he would indulge in both studio food and her cooking.
